At some point in everyone’s life, it’s very likely to be challenged with some form of mood disorder caused by an imbalance in brain chemistry. If the right amount of the right chemicals aren’t getting to the right place at the right time, one’s mental wellness will be at risk.

Appropriately, many people suffering from this type of disorder consult a healthcare professional who may prescribe medication and/or therapy to get everything back into balance. But there are also other methods and simple activities which can help improve one’s mental wellness.

For example, some have been successful avoiding or reducing the length and severity of their mood disorder with one or more of the following tips:

  • Watch what you eat. Make an effort buy and eat more healthy foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, whole grains, and fewer salty, sugary snacks and red meats.
  • Get more physically active. A sedentary lifestyle has detrimental effects on both the body and the mind. Try to achieve at least 30 minutes of walking or other aerobic activity every day.
  • Avoid alcohol. While it may seem that a drink or two will improve a bad mood, it most often has the opposite effect in the long term. Reduce or eliminate alcohol to improve brain function.
  • Find time for fresh air. Spending more time outside is a great way to help good oxygen get to the brain and balance the chemistry needed for a better mood.
  • Be sure to get plenty of sleep. Eliminating distractions at the same time every night will help ensure you’re in the right mind frame to get a full night’s sleep, and improve your mood.
  • Get creative and out of your routine. Taking your mind in new directions and trying new activities, especially those that result in creating something, will help the brain’s chemical balance.
  • Focus on others. While it’s good to take care of ourselves and spend time on self improvement, the brain also benefits from the positive feelings we get when we help others and spend time with friends.
  • Devote time each day to improving your surroundings. Painting a dresser. Buying a new lamp. Cleaning out a closet. Small steps to make your environment better will help brighten your outlook too.
